The Indian team for the England ODI and T20 series is scheduled to be announced today by the Board of control for Cricket in India (BCCI). In addition to that, something which has also come to the fore is that, Virat Kohli who is expected to lead India in the ODI’s will be rested for the T20’s.
Along with Kohli, there are questions over the fitness over several other players like Ajinkya Rahane, Mohd Shami, Rohit Sharma and many others.
News also comes in that the team management is also planning to rest the three Indian spinners in Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Jayant Yadav owing to their excessive workload in the Test series. The final decision though will be taken as per the decision of the captain.
“This will be Kohli’s first series as full-time limited-overs captain and he might ask for a full-strength squad, at least for the ODIs. The selection committee likes to know his plans and will decide accordingly,” a source close to the selection committee said.
Even Axar Patel, had injured his thumb while fielding as a substitute in the fifth Test against England. The injury forced the left-arm spinner to miss the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal and semifinal for Gujarat. If both Yadav and Patel are ruled out for the limited-overs matches against England, the selectors might be compelled to pick one between Ashwin and Jadeja, or both, for the sake of right balance. By not playing domestic cricket this term, Harbhajan Singh has all but ruled himself out of contention.
Hardik Pandya is expected to play as an all rounder in the series, however he is also recovering from a shoulder injury he sustained before the start of the Mohali Test and the team management is waiting an update on his fitness.
Interestingly, if Virat Kohli is rested for the T20 series, MS Dhoni will be once again seen captaining the series for Team India expectedly and that will be great news for Mahi fans.
