India: Muhendra Singh Dhoni played a key role in the development of the Virat Kohli from a brash young cricketer to one of the best batsmen in the world.
Back in 2008, the young Kohli was a rather inconsistent batsman and the selectors were on the verge of dropping him from the the team. His them captain Dhoni stood up on his behalf, Kohli who succeeded Dhoni as captain of India’ One Day International team over the weekend paid a tribute to his former skipper on BCCI.ttv and spoke at length about the role Dhoni played in guiding and shaping his career.
“He (Dhoni) was always the person who guided me initially and give me opportunities. He give me time and space to grow as a cricketer and saved me from getting dropped many times”, Kohli disclosed.
The relationship between the young Kohli and his captain began as a mentorship bug developed into a great friendship over the years. An emotional Kohli said Dhoni Bhai will always be his leader.
” Thanks for being the leader a youngster wants to have around him. You will always be my captain”, Kohli tweeted.
According to Kohli, his former skipper has left massive boots to fill: “You think of Mahendra Singh Dhoni and the first word that comes to mind his captain. For me, Dhoni will always be my captain.
