If Real Madrid’s dismantling of Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup didn’t send out a clear warning sign then I don’t know what will. For all the years of talk of a two-horse race in La Liga, it is now impossible to deny that the Blaugrana are trailing in the wake of their fierce rivals and Los Blancos are overwhelming favourites. Given the strength available to Zinedine Zidane, expect Real to retain their crown and Barcelona to be under more pressure than ever from the likes of Atletico Madrid and Sevilla.

Real Madrid are the favourites to win La Liga because of it is the most balanced, the most stable and the strongest side. Their direct competitors, FC Barcelona, can never be completely ruled out, but the team is enduring several problems with an aging squad. They need to find a Neymar replacement.

It’s impossible to look past Real Madrid at the moment when talking about title contenders in Spain. Since the arrival of Zinedine Zidane, Real Madrid has only been growing as a team, while main rivals Barcelona have been falling apart. The Blaugranas desperately need signings at key areas of the pitch such as left wing and midfield to compete with Real again. So Real Madrid are the favourites but don’t count out Atlético Madrid, you never should.

La Liga’s prediction might be one of the easiest in decades: Real all the way. I’m not particularly keen on them – in fact, their annoying press towel-wavers make me loathe them most of the time – but the facts are the facts: they’ve got by far the deepest squad, a tremendous starting XI, a consistently lucky manager and momentum going for them. Oh, and arch-enemy FC Barcelona are shattering to pieces as we speak because of their own board’s incompetence.

With this Barcelona, a clamped-down Atletico Madrid, and no other team on the horizon, it is almost impossible not to say Real Madrid will be champions once again. The best team in the world right now.
