Lucas Torreira – the midfield man who became a hot transfer property

🕓 Reading time:2 minutes

After a stunning start to the season for Sampdoria, Lucas Torreira is now being hunted by Europe’s bigbest clubs including Atletico Madrid

Being one of the stand-out players in an impressive Sampdoria side, Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira has rightly been praised for his performances this term. After enjoying a stellar debut campaign for Sampdoria last season, the diminutive ball winner has upped his standards once again and is looking like the real deal.

Sampdoria discovered Torreira while he was playing for Pescara in Serie B and landed the Uruguayan in the summer of 2015 for $2.3M before sending him out on loan back to Pescara for the 2015/16 season. His period at Pescara “changed his life”, according to Torreira himself.

Back in Uruguay, Torreira grew up as an attacking footballer and mostly played in the trequartista role – a position behind the strikers – for his local team Atlética 18 de Julio and later in the youth sides of Uruguayan first division club Montevideo Wanderers. When Torreira joined Pescara in 2014, after a successful trial, his position was about to change.

Federico Giampaolo, the brother of current Sampdoria manager Marco Giampaolo, decided to let Torreira play in the middle of midfield just in front of the defense. It has proven to be his perfect role.

Despite having adopted a deeper position, Torreira hasn’t lost the goal scoring touch of an attack-minded player. He showed it last weekend against Chievo Verona. One free-kick from far out and a volley from just outside the box, give an indication of how much the man born in Fray Bentos has got in his locker.

The key areas of his game have nothing do with scoring goals, though, but focuses on the transition from defense to attack and attack to defense. Torreira’s ability to time an interception, his low center of gravity and his determination he showcases in every single duel make him one of the best ball-winners in Europe.

Add to that, his capability of controlling the tempo of a match, good passing range and his dribbling skills and you’ve got a complete midfielder. Torreira is a special talent and Sampdoria have gold on their hands. “He’s a treasure for us,” said Sampdoria’s lawyer, Antonio Romei.

Big clubs in Europe will undoubtedly come calling in the next transfer window – including Atletico Madrid – and it will be hard for Sampdoria to hang on to their player, but if the right price is offered, the board will be satisfied. Sampdoria know they are a selling club and Torreira is expected to be the next big talent leaving the team.

In Uruguay, there is a growing desire to see Torreira wear the sky blue of Uruguay and after his recent performances that can only be a matter of time. Torreira has a bright future ahead of him and, although there is still a long way to go, has all the ingredients to become a genuine world-class midfielder.
