The mother of all draws has been made for the Last 16 of the Champions League to take place in February and it could be bad news for two giants
Juventus vs. Tottenham Hotspur
After topping a group that consisted of the likes of Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham Hotspur would’ve thought they ensured a relatively easy draw in the round of 16. However, Spurs will take on reigning Italian champions Juventus in what is a much-anticipated clash. Juve’s experience in Europe will give them the edge.
Winner – Juventus
Basel vs. Manchester City
For a club like Basel, progressing to the Champions League knockout rounds is something special. The Swiss side will always fight against the odds when facing the elite clubs but to draw Manchester City is perhaps the biggest mountain to climb – very apt considering their home country. The English heavyweights won’t fear anyone at the moment and will show their superiority against Basel.
Winner – Manchester City
Porto vs. Liverpool
Liverpool is one of the most illustrious European club and for the first time since 2008/09 have reached the latter stages of the Champions League. In the round of 16, the Reds face Portuguese giants Porto in an encounter in which both teams will fancy their chances. Liverpool might have the upper hand on paper but their terrible defensive record might cost them.
Winner – Liverpool
Sevilla vs. Manchester United
Also back in the Champions League knock-out phase is Manchester United. With José Mourinho at the helm, the Red Devils are looking to restore their domestic and international pride after some rocky years. In Sevilla they have a favorable opponent and over two legs, United are expected to get the job done and will.
Winner – Manchester United
Real Madrid vs. Paris Saint-Germain
Normally, favorites don’t draw each other in the early stages of the Champions League knock-out rounds but this time around, reigning European champions Real Madrid will take on one of their fiercest competitors in PSG. Neymar and co would’ve liked an easier draw but knocking out Madrid would be a real statement of intent.
Winner – Real Madrid
Shakhtar Donetsk vs. AS Roma
The most low-profile tie of the round of 16 has to be Shakhtar Donetsk against AS Roma. They shouldn’t be underestimated, however, as they eliminated Napoli and Atlético Madrid, respectively, in the group stages. Both sides will feel like this is their chance to reach a Champions League quarterfinal, which would be unique.
Winner – AS Roma
Chelsea vs. Barcelona
Few encounters have been tastier than Chelsea vs. Barcelona over the past ten years. Both sides have had their moments of fortune when facing each other and it will be fascinating to see yet another chapter added to one of the most controversial recent rivalries. At the moment, Barca will be the favorites for the bookmakers but Chelsea shouldn’t be written off.
Winner – Barcelona
Bayern Munich vs. Besiktas
Finishing top of their group, Besiktas been one of the most exciting sides to watch this season. The Turkish team will be a threat and although Bayern have avoided some big hitters, they won’t be complacent against Besiktas. Certainly away in Turkey, Bayern will have a real job on their hands.
Prediction – Besiktas
