When Cristiano Ronaldo left Santiago Bernabeu in the summer of 2018, Real Madrid were at bay and they were left clueless by the departure of manager Zinedine Zidane at the same time. Those were dark days for the Los Blancos. But tough times showed Florentino Perez the way to build the future and at the end of the season of 2019-20, Real Madrid are a unit full of smile and newly found confidence.
Luka Modric gave an interview to Sportske Novosti, where he gave his opinion.
Here are the excerpts:
A team without Cristiano Ronaldo
“It is not necessary to discuss how important Cristiano was for Real Madrid”.
“But I must say that we were not overwhelmed by the fact that he was not there in the sense that we could not have the same ambitions”.
“We were convinced that we would continue to win without him”.
The work ethic during the lockdown
“While we were confined, we all trained. I was in touch with teammates and noticed that they were all working with some extra motivation”.
“I also suppose it was because this was unexpected and a completely new situation with the pandemic”.
“We wanted football”.
“When we finally returned to training together, I felt an even stronger connection between the players, enjoying being together again and in full swing”.
“We had the continuity of playing well throughout the year, and we especially did an excellent job in the final run-in after the lockdown”.
“Our ten consecutive victories and a draw speak for themselves about this Real Madrid team”.
On Zinedine Zidane
“Zidane once again proved to be a great person”.
“He is reassuring and he is very correct in his approach to the player”.
“There are always those who do not play as much as they would like, they are not happy and that makes sense”.
“But the coach’s approach has helped everyone feel part of the team and accept their situation”.
“In this dressing room, everyone is a good guy, there is no one who creates problems for their own reasons, there are no bad apples”.
