He has discussed Real Madrid’s pre-season preparations so far and was full of praise for the dedication shown by some Los Blancos older guard in the training sessions.

Ancelotti didn’t hesitate to name players such as Dani Carvajal, Marcelo, Lucas Vazquez, Nacho Fernandez and Isco, none of whom were on international duty this summer and have therefore been present for pre-season since the start.

“We have worked a lot,” said Ancelotti.

“The players have done very well.”

“There is a lot of quality in the youngsters and a great commitment from the veterans. I really liked the commitment of Carvajal, Nacho, Marcelo, Lucas and Isco, players who have won everything and still have the desire, enthusiasm and hunger to have a great season as we would all like [to have].”

Ancelotti went on to hail David Alaba’s versatility but didn’t reveal which position he is planning to play Real Madrid’s new signing in next season.

“Alaba is a complete player, with a lot of quality and tactically intelligent in defence,” added Ancelotti.

“I put him at centre-back in the last games [at Bayern Munich], [but] sometimes he plays in midfield for Austria [and] he can also play on the left [side of defence]. He is a complete player who is going to do very well this season.”

“The team has to play well, showing the quality they have. Real Madrid’s history is [all about] energetic football, with intensity with the ball and without the ball, which is what today’s football requires.”
