It was one of the most shocking moments in the history of football when, all of a sudden, Christian Eriksen of Denmark and Inter, collapsed in the middle of the group match against Finland. He suffered a cardiac arrest and at one point, it seemed that the Danish star would not survive. But, thankfully, the medical was competent enough to stabilize Eriksen.
Martin Braithwaite has given a heartbreaking insight into his reaction to Eriksen’s collapse and stated that he had no doubt that his teammate was dead.
In a new four-part documentary series about Braithwaite, produced by Lucky Metal and 433, the striker has opened up on how he was impacted by what happened that day in Copenhagen.
“I have experienced one of the most terrible situations in my life,” he said in a vlog as part of the documentary.
What was meant to be the biggest sports event in Danish history turned out just to be a nightmare!
“What happened that night shocked a lot of people!”
He added that, as he looked at Eriksen, he believed that he was dead.
“There was one moment I looked at [Eriksen] and he was gone,” the striker said.
“When you look at a body where the person is dead, you have no doubt.”
“You know right away. That is what I saw.”
He went on to state that, all he could do in that situation was to pray.
“When I saw that I started to pray hard,” he said.
“I felt it was the only thing I could do in that moment. Turn to God.”
“We had all the doctors working on him and that image is something that I don’t wish for anyone to see.”
“It all finished with a good ending, Christian is good and stable. That’s the only thing that we could wish for.”
