Giorgio Chiellini has aimed something of a veiled attack towards Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting it would have been better for Juventus if he left the club earlier than he did.
There was speculation throughout the summer that Ronaldo would be on his way out of the Allianz Stadium after spending three years in Turin, but it wasn’t until the final few days of the transfer window that the Portuguese superstar made his move to Manchester United.
“We had reached a point in the relationship where Cristiano needed new incentives and a new team that could play for him,’ Chiellini told DAZN, ‘because when he finds such a team he is decisive.’
“He has been proving it in recent months and showed it in the three years that he was with us.”
A rejuvenation restart program grew here at Juventus. If Ronaldo had stayed, it would have been added value and we would have gladly exploited it, but he might be thinking more about the present than the future.
“He left on August 28, it would have been better for us if he had left earlier. It’s something we paid for, there’s a little shock in it for you and in my opinion, we paid for it in terms of points.”
“Had he gone away on August 1st, we would have had time to prepare better.”
Juventus started the season in woeful form and were unable to win any of their first four Serie A matches of the campaign. However, things have settled and the Bianconeri are now on a seven-match unbeaten run and face huge rivals Inter on Sunday in the Derby d’Italia.
