Cadiz beat Barcelona

It hasn’t been a happy Easter period for Barcelona, who followed up being knocked out of the Europa League on Thursday with a 1-0 home defeat to Cadiz in LaLiga Santander on Monday.

The Blaugrana’s failure to win means that any faint hopes they may have harboured that the title race wasn’t over have now been extinguished. Real Madrid aren’t mathematically champions, but their lead looks unassailable at this stage in the season.

That shouldn’t be Barcelona’s main concern, however, as they have never really been in the title hunt this season. More concerning is that there are level on points with third and fourth place and only three ahead of fifth.

In the remaining games, the Catalans will be aiming to secure a top-four spot and a ticket to next season’s Champions League, which currently is by no means certain.

For Cadiz, this was a historic night, the first win away to Barcelona ever for the club, and a fully deserved one after a hardworking and effective performance, frustrating the hosts and proving ruthless when they needed to be.

Lucas Perez, who had gone close in the first half, rifled home what was to prove the decisive goal in the 48th minute. Xavi shuffled his back as Barcelona pushed for an equaliser, but Cadiz mostly restricted them to difficult shots.

Luuk de Jong came closest with a header which was comfortably saved before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was denied by the brilliant Ledesma, but arguably Cadiz had the best chance late on when Alejandro Fernandez Iglesias steered an effort just wide.
